Under The Eucalyptus Tree™
How
did you arrive at the title of the seminar?
The
title is derived from the writings of Nobel prize recipient
Barbara McClintock, a pioneering biologist, on the subject of
reflective pause. By her own admission, her confidence in her
own abilities began to fail; she felt that she was taking on
more that she was capable of. At one point in her research at
Stamford
University
, McClintock spent days of working on a particular problem and
found that she wasn’t getting anywhere. “ I got very
discouraged –something was quite seriously wrong. I wasn’t
seeing things, I wasn’t integrating, I wasn’t getting things
right at all. I was lost.”
Realizing she had to “do something”, she went for a
walk down a long winding driveway of giant eucalyptus trees, and
sat down on a bench where she could sit.
McClintock sat for about a half an hour. “Suddenly I
jumped up, I couldn’t wait to get back to the laboratory. I
knew I was going to solve it – everything was going to be all
right.”
It
was. McClintock went on to change the course of scientific
research in biogenetics. Beyond the initial discoveries after
her experience of reflective pause, many years of work ensued.
However, McClintock felt that it was “what
happened under the eucalyptus trees” that was crucial. She
brought a change in herself that enabled her to see more
clearly, “reorienting” herself in such a way that she could
immediately “integrate” what she discovered. "I don't
know what I asked myself; all I knew was that I had to go out
under those eucalyptus trees and solve what was causing me to
fail." Reflective pause became the key to undiscovered
confidence and creative imagination.
What
is reflective pause?
Reflective
pause is the process of looking
back, as if in a mirror, to the experiences that your life
presents. To reflect, we must look within ourselves under quiet
conditions, trusting that our lives will speak clearly in that
solitude. We must trust what our lives speak; is vital to
holistic well-being. This necessitates a change of lifestyle
counter to the society within which we live. This culture
demands that we spent our time in unexamined productivity,
relentlessly insisting that success depends on output.
Reflective
pause doesn’t
deny this busy existence, but rather, offers a means of
achieving peaceful well-being within contemporary everyday life.
Under The Eucalyptus Tree™
offers an integrated approach to the power and the practice of
pause, honoring the creative capacity within each person to live
a rich, authentic human life.
What
does this mean for me ?
This
potential depends on your willingness to befriend and enter
deeply and openly into your own experiences. You can derive
meaning for your life from your experiences as you learn and
practice the techniques used in
Under the Eucalyptus
Tree™. These methods will enable
you to naturally and over time, unconsciously muse and reflect,
and come to new insight and learning. This process will impact
your very way of being when you intentionally incorporate a
practice of reflective pause with daily living. The wisdom that
you will come to draw upon within the ordinary events of your
life will lead you to discover a more imaginative and creative
self, leading you to do extraordinary things.
How
does the seminar work?
The
event is constructed in four parts within a two hour session:
1. A brief introduction of the participants accompany
a short lecture about reflective pause.
2. A guided meditation is constructed through imagery,
calming breathing and light stretching.
3. Creative imprinting reconstructs the experience, to use
as a memory tool for further contemplation on your own. Ten
minute chair massage is available during this part of the
exercise.
4. Group reflection of the entire experience enables
an articulated source of the entire event. Light refreshments
are served during the reflection.
